In 1989 she graduated from the Department of Restoration of Roerich School of Arts in St. Petersburg, and was qualified as Tempera and Oil Paint Artwork Restorer. She began her restoration practice at Restavrator Research and Production Studio as gilder and restorer of gilded surfaces. Since 1991 she has been employed at the State Russian Museum. She specializes mostly in restoration of carved icons and wooden polychrome sculptures.

In 2007–2011 she also served as restoration artist in the Russian Museum and Deputy Director for Restoration at PROstil Architectural Restoration Firm. She also oversaw the restoration project of the San-Galli Mansion,built in the 19th century. Majored in Art Studies at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, and in Socio-Cultural Service and Tourism at St. Petersburg University of Management and Economics. Maksimenko has published research dedicated to studying and restoring valuable artifacts of ancient Russian applied arts.
