Was born in 1958 in Moscow. In 1980 graduated from the Faculty of History of Moscow State University, defended his Candidate dissertation.

In the early 1990s continued his academic career in the US, where he became one of the leading specialists in history of the Cold War. He taught at American universities.

Since 2013 he has been a Full Professor at the London School of Economics and Political Sciences. Author of many books, including "The Failed Empire: The USSR in the Cold War", "Zhivago's Children: Last Russian Intelligentsia", and "Life and Century: Dmitry Likhachev". Author of many articles, compiled several collections of documents on recent history events.
