She graduated from the Lomonosov Moscow State University with a degree in Art History and straight after graduation started working in the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. In 1961–2003 she was a Director of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, and in 2013 she became a President of the Museum. She organized such large-scale exhibitions as 'Moscow — Paris', 'Moscow — Berlin', 'Russia — Italy', 'Modigliani', 'Turner', 'Picasso', etc. in the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. In 1981 she became a co-founder of the annual December Nights Festival of Music and Painting held in the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts.
