He graduated from the Lviv Conservatory and the assistantship of the Leningrad Conservatory as a composer, and the Leningrad Institute of the Theater, Music and Cinema as a researcher. Main directions of scientific work: traditional musical instruments and instrumental music of Slavic, Finno-Ugric, Turkic peoples; Organology and Organophony; Phenomenology and the Theory of Instrumental Musical Art; Comparative Art History; Methodology of Field, Transcriptional and Analytical Work; ways of systematic generalization of the phenomena of artistic culture. 28 Candidates and 7 Doctors of Science of St. Petersburg, Moscow, Bashkortostan, Karelia, Mordovia, Adygea, Mari El, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Palestine were trained under the leadership of I. Matsievsky.
