In 1995, Alexey Vasilyev graduated from Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg State Conservatory, where he studied cello performance under People's Artist of Russia, Professor Anatoly Pavlovich Nikitin. During his studies at the Conservatory, Mr. Vasilyev performed in the cello section of the Distinguished Collective of Russia, Academic Symphonic Orchestra of St. Petersburg Philharmonic under the direction of Yuri Temirkanov. In 2004−2005, he served as the cello section leader. Alexey Vasilyev started teaching while still a student of the Conservatory, and continues teaching to this day. He is the director of the Cello Performance program at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, the Secondary Special School of Music at the Conservatory, Rimsky-Korsakov St. Petersburg College of Music.
Mr. Vasilyev maintains a rigorous touring program as a soloist and a participant in different music ensembles. As a soloist, Alexey Vasilyev has performed with the Distinguished Collective of Russia Academic Symphony Orchestra of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the Symphony Orchestra of the Academic Capella of St. Petersburg, the Symphony Orchestra of St. Petersburg, and the St. Petersburg State Academic Symphony Orchestra. He has worked with such renowned conductors as Leo Korkhin, Ravil Martynov, Algirdas Paulavicius, Vladimir Begletsov, Svyatoslav Lyuter, Alexander Chernushenko, Vladimir Alempyev, and Roman Leontiev.
Since 2006, Professor Vasilyev has served as the Director of Rimsky-Korsakov Saint Petersburg College of Music. Since 2008, he has been teaching Orchestra at Rimsky-Korsakov Saint Petersburg College of Music and Heads the Algirdas Paulavicius Youth Symphony Orchestra.
