On the 12th November famous German artists: baritone Manuel Walser and pianist Nikolaus Rexroth will present Franz Schubert famous vocal cycle “Winterreise” (Winter journey) in the Small hall of the St. Petersburg State Philharmonic.
Complicated and multifaceted cycle needs not only absolute technic of both musicians, but also artistic matureness and stage experience. Mainly that are the reasons why these songs can be rarely heard in Russia, as well as in German-speaking countries. Concert, originally planned as a part of the St. Petersburg International Culture Forum, will mark the final point of the large-scale German Year in Russia 2020/2021 project.
Both musicians are often on the playbills of the main venues and festivals. Baritone Manuel Walser, among those teachers is Thomas Quasthoff, regularly performs at the Vienna and Berlin State Operas productions. He has wide chamber repertoire and doing recitals in Berlin Philharmonic and Konzerthaus, Vienna Musikverein, on festivals in Lucerne and Salzburg. Nikolaus Rexroth plays at such prestigious stages as Berlin Philharmonic, Berlin Konzerthaus, Mariinsky theatre, Moscow State Conservatory. He is a current member of many classic music festivals, among them are Stars of the White Nights, Moscow Easter Festival, “MPHIL 360’” in Munich, Beethoven festival in Bonn, Music Days in Kassel and many more.
“Winterreise” is one of the most popular vocal cycles of the romantic music, where Schubert expressed existential pain of the human during his course of life.
Last year project of the RCCR Projects GmbH, dedicated to the end of the World War II, was awarded with the first prize in the main category “Best online project” of the All-Russian award “Kultura online” at the St. Petersburg International Culture Forum. The award ceremony took place on the 11th November 2020 and became the only one event of the Forum which was cancelled because of Coronavirus pandemic.
This year Nikolaus Rexroth joined the award expert council, and together with leading culture figures of Russia under the chairmanship of Deputy Minister of Culture Alla Manilova will choose the best online project of 2021.
