The bicentennial of I. S. Turgenev is a historically significant moment that presents a convenient occasion to summarize the results of fundamental studies of the great writer’s work, and discuss the future studies of his heritage in the 21st century. We need to analyze and improve the ways of popularizing Turgenev’s body of work, and generate coursework for secondary and higher education programs in Russian literature for Russian universities and institutions of higher learning abroad.

To this end, the event will bring together representatives of the international community of linguists who are interested in researching work and the life story of Turgenev, and the influences his heritage has had on Russian and global cultures. The conference program will include reports on latest studies in aforementioned fields. Presenters will talk about historical and literary aspects of Turgenev’s work, his poetics, the relationship of his literary creations to the literary heritage of his era, his contemporaries and subsequent generations of writers. Plans are to continue studying the creative history behind Turgenev’s work, its problem areas, his language and style, and clarify shared understandings of the author’s views on life, his place in the literature of his era, and analyze the various influences on his work, his influences on the literary process, and the problems of perception of his work in Russia and abroad. All these aspects will help define more clearly the place Turgenev occupies in Russian and world culture.

The conference will celebrate the bicentennial of Turgenev’s birth (November 9 (October 28 OS), 1818). It will take place on November 15-17, 2018. The conference will be hosted by Turgenev’s alma mater, St. Petersburg State University where he studied in 1833-1836 in the Department of Philosophy, which was the center of all studies across the board in Humanities at the time. It was there that Turgenev first started writing, and he felt deeply connected to the institution throughout his life.
